Meet our Members: Featuring Margaret Conneely

Who is your hero? My mother – her cooking, her positive outlook and incredible faith

If you could live anywhere, where would it be? California or Wisconsin – by a lake or ocean

What is your biggest fear? termites

What is your favorite family vacation? Going with my extended family – all renting cabins in Wisconsin on the lake. Just being together in such a serene place

What would you change about yourself if you could? Lose 100 pounds

What really makes you angry? When students give up and drop my class. Often there is time to pull the grade up but it involves working that much harder. Also, I would include academic dishonesty 😠

What fictional character do you most relate to? John Keating in Dead Poets Society – he was played by Robin Williams. John tried to inspire his students to think outside the box and see opportunities. “Seize the day”

What motivates you to work hard? Seeing my students grow academically and then, professionally

What is your favorite thing about your career? My students

What is your biggest strength that makes you successful? COMPASSION! I teach as I would have loved to been taught. I "borrow" from my favorite past teachers

What is your proudest accomplishment? Being hired at COD as part of this amazing accounting team and entrusted to teach such wonderful people

If you could compare your job to a movie, which title seems most appropriate? During tax season – Wonder Woman!

What would you sing at Karaoke night? Nothing – I could not subject anyone to my “singing”

What made you passionate about payroll? It’s the foundation for family finances and the largest expense outside of cost of goods sold for my business clients. It’s central to both family and business. Every one of my students has or will be an employee at some point in time. They will have the skills and knowledge to be proactive with regard to their own paychecks in addition to potentially helping others in the profession

What do you think could change this industry for the better? More career information! Many of my students never thought of a career as a payroll professional. After taking my class, some of them are pursuing it. Having the Fox Valley APA Chapter reach out to my students through class speakers and meeting invites has opened up a whole new profession to them

Why should people want to pursue payroll as a professional? Death and taxes – you can always count on both as long as you live! The career will stand the test of time, politics and even, natural disasters! Additionally, if you like working with and helping people, enjoy finance and accounting, then a payroll career should be on your radar

What is the most fulfilling part of your membership in FVPA? With my schedule, I cannot participate as much as I would like, but I would have to say it’s the friendships I’ve gained. They are priceless

😍
